S1 Wk 8 - Correlational Designs Flashcards
What is a correlational design
a Research set up to investigate relationships between variables
What are correlations
Statistical analysis of relationships between variables
the mean
The average response to the variable
What is the standard deviation
Variance in response to the variable
What is the empirical rule also known as
the 68-95-99.7 rule
what are Z scores
A standardised value describing a data point in a normal distribution
represents how far above / below the mean of participant is, in terms of number of standard deviations
Who is Pearsons r
a parametric test of association
What does Pearsons r assume that you are looking at
Linear relationships
variables are normally distributed and scale type
there are no outliers
Writing up correlations what three things do we need to tell the reader
The size and direction of the correlation
the size of the sample used for the calculation
an indication of whether or not we can reject our null hypothesis
When do we consider results to be statistically significant
When the p-value is smaller than .05
What is centring
Scaling a data point to refer to being above or below the mean
