S1: Prehospital Care - Bomb, Blast, And Crush Injuries Flashcards
What is a primary injury?
Direct efficacy of blast wave overpressure on tissue
What is a secondary blast injury?
Collateral damage feom flying objects and shrapnel
What is a tertiary blast injury?
Results from the victime being propelled through the air and striking stationay objects
What is a quaternary blast injury?
a result of burns, smoke inhalation, or chemical agent release
What is spalling?
the displacemebt and fragmentation of a dense medium into a less dense medium
What is shearing?
Sometimes called as inertia
A stress caused by the blast wave travelling through different tissue densities at different velocities.
What is an implosion?
Opposite of spalling
Less dense material is displaced into denser material
What is the most commom fatal primary blast injury?
Pulmonary barotrauma
What is the most serious complication of crush injury?
Renal failure
What is the normal compartment pressure?
<10mmhg
At what pressures does the muscle ischemia, irreversible nerve damage and muscle damage occur?
> 30mmhg
What are the 5ps of compartment syndrome?
Pain
Paresethesia
Passive stretch
Pressure
Pulselessness
