S1-Acid and Bases Flashcards
What is the chemical formula of Sulfuric acid?
H2 SO4
What is the chemical formula of Hydrochloric acid?
HCl
What is the chemical formula of Nitric acid?
HNO3
What are the 6 properties of acid?
- sour taste
- turn blue litmus paper red
- pH value less than 7
- corrosive
- conduct electricity
- react with metals, carbonates, bases/alkalis
What is the word equation for reaction between acid and metal?
acid + metal -> salt + hydrogen
How to test for hydrogen gas?
- lighted splint
- ‘pop’ sound
- lighted splint extinguishes
Are salts neutral substances?
Yes
What does carbonates contain?
metal or ammonium ions
What is the word equation for acid + carbonate?
acid + carbonate -> salt + water + carbon dioxide
How to test for carbon dioxide?
- limewater ( calcium hydroxide )
- turn chalky/cloudy/milky
What is neutralisation reaction?
Acids react with base or alkali to form salt and water
acid + base/alkali -> salt + water
Uses of sulfuric acid
- fertilisers
- detergents
- batteries (vehicles)
Uses of hydrochloric acid
- removal of rust
- leather processing
Uses of ethanoic acid
- vinegar (preserve)
- adhesives
Uses of citric acid
- preservative
- flavouring
Uses of nitric acid
- production of fertilisers
- explosives
- plastic
- medicinal drug
What are bases?
They are compounds formed between metals and oxygen, so they are oxides of metals. They react with acids to produce salt and water only.
What is an alkali?
Bases that are soluble in water (hydroxide)
What are the 6 properties of alkalis?
- bitter taste
- slippery/ soapy
- turn red litmus paper blue
- corrosive
- conduct electricity
- neutralisation
Use of calcium hydroxide / oxide
-neutralise acid in soil
Use of aluminium hydroxide
- antacid (ingestion tablet)
- relieve pain in stomach
Uses of magnesium hydroxide
- antacid
- toothpaste
Uses of sodium hydroxide
- floor, oven cleaner
- soaps and detergents
Use of ammonia
-window cleaning solution
