Anything that has mass and volume.
What is mass?
The amount of matter in an object.
What is energy?
Anything that can do work or produce heat.
What is weight?
The force of gravity acting on an object’s mass.
What are the characteristics of solids?
Definite shape and definite volume.
What are the characteristics of liquids?
Indefinite shape and definite volume.
What are the characteristics of gases?
Indefinite shape and indefinite volume.
What are pure substances?
Have uniform and definite composition.
What are elements?
Found on the periodic table (approx. 118).
What are compounds?
Formed when elements chemically combine (e.g., H2O, CO2, NO2).
What are mixtures?
Two or more substances physically mixed together.
What is the difference between compounds and mixtures?
In compounds, the elements are bonded to each other; in mixtures, the substances are blended.
What are heterogeneous mixtures?
Do not have a uniform composition; parts can be physically seen and picked out.
Give examples of heterogeneous mixtures.
Cereal, pizza, salad.
