Aim
To investigate whether loving and nurturing care could overturn the effects of institutionalisation the children suffered in Romanian orphanages.
Procedure
Longitudinal Study - physical, emotion and cognitive development were assesed at ages 4,6,11 and 15
Sample
111 Romanian orphans who were adopted into British families
Studied three groups
Adopted before age of 6 month
Adopted between 6 month and 2 years
Adopted after the age of 2
Compare to control group of 52 British adopted children
Findings
50% of the Romanian children showed signs of cognitive impairment and were severely undernourished
Age of 4 years the children was making good recoveries
Those adopted later had a much higher level of disinhibited attachment.
Age of 11 the mean IQ for those adopted later
Was lower (77) than those adopted earlier (102) showing cognitive impairment
