Secure 70% - consistently responsive caregiver
Insecure avoidant 20% - unresponsive caregiver
Insecure resistant 10% - inconsistent caregiver
P: Weakness lacks ecological validity
E: takes place in controlled environment (room with two way mirror).
E: not appropriate the generalise the finding to real life. Infant may act differently in an new environment.
L: Lowering external validity of research into attachment types.
P: Strength being high in reliability
E: conducted in controlled setting (room with two way mirror) using a standardised procedure.
E: each variable was assessed for 3 min interval.
L: can be repeated again in same condition to check for consistent results and has been carried out sucessfully in many different cultures.
P: weakness Imposed Etic
E: based on American child rearing practices and ignores practices in other cultures.
E: Germany independence is encouraged in infants and an insecure avoidant attachment type may be desirable.
L: Strange Situation may not appropriate to measure attachment types in other cultured.
