A

1. Absolutists (believed power came from God).
2. Political institutions come from the Middle Ages, and Russia was not modernly advanced.
- Russia wanted to be as advanced as the western world, therefore they began industrializing (exploiting factory workers)

Who is Alexander the second, and when did he rule?

A

1855-1881, he was known as the great reformer.
- abolished serfdom, and created a zemstvo.

serfdom: a system of enforced labour where landowners own the people who tend the land.
- people buy land and own the people who work on the land.

zemstvo: a local assembly which provided people with a voice.
- elected by people, and nobles.
- Property-based voting
- provided the rich and powerful

A

Military growth, they wanted efficient transportation which was funded by the government.
- 1860: 12,000 miles of track
- 1875: 15,000 miles of track.

the track stitched Russia, Ukraine, and Poland together.

- Experienced the siege war which was professionally and educationally organized
- Realizing the railway was the future of Russia and raising tariffs to protect the emerging industries in Russia.

A

1904, occurred because Russia’s rapid industrialization helped aid its invasion of Japan.
- Japanese won (propaganda labeled them as Japanese rats)
- Due to the loss of the war Russia lost sparks and liberals demanded democracy starting the ideology of nationalism for Russia to take control of Ukraine and Poland.
