Why did communication make it difficult to govern Russia?

A

Communication was poor- roads weren’t suitable in winter and railway travel could take a long time. This would make it difficult for Nicholas to inform people of the way he wanted Russia to operate

Q

Why did Russification make it difficult to govern Russia?

A

Many national minorities hated Russian control- there was a policy where non Russians had to speak Russia, wear Russian clothes and adopt customs. Native Russians also usually got the better jobs. This created tensions and increased the chance of future conflicts.

16
Q

Why would modernisation be good for Russia?

A

It would make Russia a great power, increase their military strength, increase their wealth, reduce starvation and reduce land being overcrowded

17
Q

What were the problems with modernisation?

A

It would be difficult to maintain a tsarist government as most modern countries believed in democracy, it would lead to social tension, there would be a demand for educated workers who could challenge the government and there would be a growth in middle class leading to pressure for political change.
