Q

What are the conflicts from environmentalists vs water users (4)

A
  • noise and water pollution- disturbs locals
  • water pollution, drops of fuel can affect the water eg fishes
  • river bank erosion- weight from speedboats hit banking which causes it to wear away, polluting the lake with the broken up banking.
  • dangerous, jet skis etc and swimmers in the same area

Q

What are the solutions and effectiveness of the conflict between environmentalists and water unions (3 solutions and 3 effectiveness)

A
  • solution, reinforce banking eg concrete to stop the sides eroding, effectiveness, bad due to the unsightly below he surface and can be expensive
  • solution, zoning, restricting different lake users to different parts of the lake, effectiveness good because you can restrict erosion to certain areas which makes it cheaper and easier to manage
  • solution, having a 10mph speed limit, reducing noise pollution, bad because thrill seekers will go elsewhere, impacts local businesses and economy

Q

What’s the conflict of local vs tourists (4 and named example)

A

Named example: honeypot towns such as Keswick, Bowness on Windermere

-air pollution- CO2 creating global warming… affecting asthmatics etc

-Noise pollution- disturbs locals
Congestion such as in honey pots towns such as Keswick

-Volume of visitors, overflowing car parks, resulting in people parking on verges and edge of roads, destroying grass and eroding verges

  • congestion, increases journey time for locals, slow moving traffic means low gears and more engine revs- more pollution

Q

What’s the solution and effectiveness of the local vs tourist conflict ( 3 solutions and evaluations)

A
  • solution, ‘go lakes programme’- allows access to all public transport eg busses, ferries etc- not worked because cars are more convenient especially if you have equipment such as buggies etc
  • solution, putting bus timetables with tourists leaflets so people know which bus times, not effective because people don’t like sticking to a timetable on holiday

-solution, build large edge of town car park eg water head, 1 mile from centre of Ambleside which can hold volumes of cars and stop people parking in CBD. Bad because unsightly and spoils views

Q

What’s the conflict of tourists/ walkers v environmentalists ( 5 and named example)

A
  • named example: footpath erosion on Hevellyn, Scafell pyke

-volumes of people walking on the same path (22 million visitor days)

  • muddy paths- people walks to the side- widens the path
  • high rainfall in the LDNP- soil which has been loosened by people walking on it gets walked away.
  • mountain banks cuts deeper into the paths, speeding up the process of erosion

-people take short cuts away from the designated paths- destroys the plants and grass etc

Q

What are the solutions and evaluations of tourists/ walkers vs enviormentalists

A

Solution- sign posts, encouraging people to stay on the path- Not effective because people may ignore the signs and making them too big may be unsightly

Solutions, cloche netting- mesh put down which allows replanting of grass seed- mesh holds in place. Not effective because it only works in places of minor erosion but won help in deep erosion.

Solution, stone pitching, large blocks of local stone are put on the path- hard wearing so wont erode quickly. It’s not effective because because its hard to access steeper and higher areas with heavy stone, it is also expensive with £100 a meter

Q

what’s the conflict of quarrying vs tourists (4)

A

-unsightly- spoils landscape/ views
- can be noisy, blasting of rocks disturbs the piece, can disturb the live stock and can cause sheep to miscarry, reduction in profits for farmers
-dust- can settle in crops and peoples gardens , can block light and restrict growth for the crops, also causing breathing difficulties for asthmatics
- large trucks for transferring rocks, in towns such as Keswick on Windermere can cause vibrations and damage buildings, it can also create traffic congestions

Q

what’s the solution/ effectiveness of quarrying vs tourists (4 of each)

A
  • solution, plant trees to screen quarry from view, not effective because trees take a long time to grow and it doesn’t stop noise pollution
  • solution, restrict blasting times to less busy days and avoid tourist season, not effective because it doesn’t stop completely and people will still complain
  • ensure rucks are covered, effective because it means there will be less trucks in town
  • restoration plans can be required in which quarries have to return to nature when they leave, effective because it can create new habitats so natives can live and it will also remove the scar on the landscape
