Rural 1 - Planning Flashcards
Name the rural area we studied
South Hams (Slapton vs. Chillington villages)
Explain one reason we chose the South Hams?
Area is varied so we could get a range of results / we could get a contrast between two villages
What’s are the main differences between Slapton and Chillington?
Main road (A379) runs through Chillington Slapton is away from the main road
What was our rural enquiry question?
A lack of accessibility will decrease the rate of change (decline) in more remote villages, i.e. Slapton
There has been less change in Slapton than Chillington, because Slapton is a more remote village
Suggest two factors we considered when choosing the fieldwork locations?
Accessibility - we could walk to Slapton from the field centre, and it was a short coach journey to Chillington (we could collect the data in one day)
Geography - Chillington was on the main road (A379) - Slapton wasn’t;
What was our sampling strategy?
Stratified - Slapton vs. Chillington
What were our sub-hypotheses?
Accessiblity score will be lower in Slapton than Chillington
Environmental quality will be higher in Slapton
There will have been a greater decline in services in Slapton
There will be fewer opportunities for residents of Slapton
Explain one disadvantage of using 2010 IMD to investigate rural quality of life
Data is from 2010, so might be out of date
IMD is a composite index, so has domains (measurements) that might not be relevant to rural deprivation
Explain a weakness of using a choropleth map to investigate rural deprivation?
They exaggerate differences between areas - two areas might be very similar, but fall into different categories
They don’t show variations in an area - might disguise a pocket of deprivation
Identify four considerations when picking rural geography fieldwork sites
Getting a range of deprivation
Size of ward - is there enough time to gather data
Distance from Field Centre
Safety
Identify limitations of bi-polar scales?
Relies on subjective judgements, not a pre-calibrated scores. Hard to compare scores.
Judgements are not weighted on their importance (e.g. some types of deprivation are worse than others)
Descriptors mean different things to different people, so can be unreliable.
What theories did we base our investigation on?
Rural-urban continuum, the difference between accessible and remote-rural villages
Index of Multiple Deprivation - one type of deprivation is likely to lead to another (a spiral of decline)
What secondary sources did we use?
DataShine Census
South Hams Gazette + The Guardian newspaper articles
Graphs about population in South Hams
Index of Multiple Deprivation 2010
