Ruminants Flashcards

Q

Sedimentation / Flotation test

A

Time for complete sedimentation, flotation of solid particles
4-8 mins.

  • Active: sedimentation, subsequent floating
  • Incr sedimentation
  • Inactive: rapid sedimentation, ~ / NO floating
  • Frothy: everything is floating -> frothy bloat (Hoflund D., treatment with Smimetics-ruminal atonia).

Q

Explain reducing ability of ruminal fluids

A

Bacteria -> dehydrogenation -> reducing ability
Tests:
- Nitrite reduction (KNO2): in presence of nitrtite => PINK (disappears in 10 mins), green fodder/ruminal decomp/bloat => fast, deficient ratio in feed => slow
- Methylene blue: discoloration, blue ring on the surface
- TTC: incubation => RED
