What rules are there to overtake another vehicle going in the same direction? (4)
Pass to the right at a safe distance
Do not move back to the left side until past the vehicle overtaken
Do not exceed the speed limit
Do not pass on the shoulder of a roadway
When can you pass on the left side of a vehicle?
If you can do so without endangering yourself or other traffic and the vehicle you are overtaking is turning to its right/is indicating right, and you must give visible signals
When can you not pass other traffic moving in the same direction?
When approaching:
-The summit of a rise
-A curve
-Any place where the view ahead is not visible unless:
+the driver can do so without cutting into the right side
+or the road is the road is not for vehicles moving in the same direction
What should you do when you see other traffic passing in the same direction and intending to pass you?
Drive as near to the left as possible without endangering anyone/thing
Do not increase your speed until the other vehicle has passed
What is the number one rule for driving on a freeway?
Keep left, overtake right
Who gets right of way at an intersection?
Vehicles approaching to the driver’s right within the junction

Who must wear seatbelts when the vehicle is in motion?
Everyone 3 years of age and older, unless an appropriate child restraint is available for persons aged 3-14 who are under 1.5m tall.
What are the exceptions for seatbelt usage? (5)
People younger than 3 years old
Child restraint for persons aged 3-14 under 1.5m tall
Persons aged 3-14 under 1.5m tall must sit in the backseat if there are no seats equipped with seatbelts
A seat without a seatbelt when all seats fitted with seatbelts are occupied

Two red retro-reflectors must be fitted on the rear of the vehicle, one on each side
What are the rules for retro-reflectors on heavy motor vehicles?
Must be fitted with two red retro-reflectors at the same height on the rear
A heavy motor vehicle or combination which exceeds 7m must be fitted with yellow retro-reflectors such that no two successive ones are more than 3.6m apart, unless it is fitted with yellow reflective strips
What must a vehicle with a load that projects more than 150mm to the side/300mm to the rear be marked by?
During the day a red flag/flags 300mm x 300mm
At night retro-reflectors

Gives enough visibility for safe driving
Have visible light transmission through the windscreen of at least 70%

When must the headlamps, rear lamps, and number plate lamps be kept lighted?
Between sunset and sunrise
When there is unfavourable weather conditions, insufficient light and when you cannot see vehicles and persons 150m away
How bright must the main beam be?
Adequately bright to brighten the area ahead of the vehicle, allowing the driver to see anything substantial from at least 100m away
How bright must the dipped beam be?
Adequately brighten the area ahead of the vehicle, allowing the driver to see anything substantial from at least 45m away
When must you use the dipped beam?
When following another vehicle
When there is oncoming traffic
What lights must be fitted on the rear of motor vehicles to allow it on a public road?
A red rear lamp which emits red light to the rear for motorcycles and tricycles, and at least one on each side of the rear for light and heavy motor vehicles
Stop lamps on all vehicles, which produce brighter red light than that emitted by the rear lamp/s and must be visible from 30m away in normal sunlight.
At least one number plate lamp which allows every letter and figure on the plate to be visible from 20m away
What are the requirements for affixing an approved number plate? (4)
Cannot be easily removed
In an upright position/within 30 degrees of an upright position
Letters and figures must be clearly visible
On all vehicles to the back and on the front of motor vehicles
When can you light your vehicle’s fog lamps?
In poor conditions which reduce visibility, caused by:
- Snow
- Fog
- Mist

What brakes must all light and heavy motor vehicles have?
A service brake
A parking brake
An emergency brake (same as parking brake)
What are the requirements for a light motor vehicle’s tires?
Must be fitted with inflated tires which display a pattern around them and has a tread of at least 1mm
What is the maximum allowed turning radius of a motor vehicle?
13.1m
What are the requirements for a motor vehicle’s efficient exhaust silencer? (4)
Allow exhaust gas from the engine to be protected
Not give out exhaust gas from the engine tat is dense enough to cause nuisance to or hinder the vision of others
Not allow oil and other flammable liquid to drop onto it
Not let exhaust gas or smoke into the driving cab or passenger compartment
How must the driver of a stationary vehicle along the roadway of the public road display at least one emergency warning sign?
The sign must be at least 45m from the vehicle in the direction where traffic will approach when travelling on the side of the road closest to the vehicle
Sign must be as far from the edge of the road as the transverse center of the vehicle is from the edge of the road
The reflective sign must face approaching traffic
When do you not need to place an emergency warning sign when stationary? (4)
In an area where there is a traffic sign that allows loading and offloading of a vehicle

A goods vehicle with a GMV of 12 000 or more, if the overall width is more than 2.6m
Any other vehicle if the overall width exceeds 2.5m
How are goods not allowed to be loaded?
In a way where they may touch the road surface
In a way where they obscure the driver’s view of the road in any direction
Where they are not covered within the body of the vehicle, or securely fastened to the vehicle.
Under what circumstances can people be carried on a goods vehicle?
The part of the vehicle carrying them must be enclosed to a height of:
- When they are seated at least 350mm above the surface
- When standing, at least 900mm above the surface
Can you use a motorcycle to tow another vehicle?
No
When are you not allowed to tow another vehicle on a public road?
If the length of the tow-rope, chain or tow-bar between the two vehicles exceeds 3.5m
With a tow-rope/chain at a speed of 30km/h
-If with a draw bar/tow-bar, 30km/h is fine
If the towed vehicle is conveying persons at a speed of more than 30km/h
If the brakes of the towed vehicle do not comply with the provisions unless the towing vehicle is connected to the towed vehicle by a draw bar/tow-bar
When can you tow another vehicle with passengers on a public road at a speed of more than 30km/h?
If the towed vehicle is a semi-trailer
If the steering gear of the towed vehicle is controlled by a person holding a code of driving license which authorises them to drive the towed vehicle
What is the restriction of a combination of vehicles?
A drawing vehicle and two trailers
A drawing vehicle and another motor vehicle which is not a trailer
-You are allowed to draw or tow a motor vehicle and a trailer in an emergency
How must a sidecar be attached to a motorcycle on a public road?
The sidecar must be attached to the left side of the motorcycle
A motorcycle with an engine capacity of 50cc or less may not have a sidecar
What is the rule for cell phone use while driving?
You are not allowed to handle a cellphone in one or both hands or any other part of the body when driving
What are the rules for intoxication of liquor or drugs?
No person is allowed to drive a vehicle on a public road if their blood alcohol concentration is 0.05g per 100ml of blood or more.
For a professional driver blood alcohol concentration is not allowed to be 0.02g per 100ml of blood or more
When under the influence of any narcotic substance, you should not drive on a public road, or occupy the drivers seat while the engine is running
What makes a vehicle abandoned?
If left for a continuous period of more than 24 hours on a public road outside an urban area
If left for a continuous period of more than 7 days on a public road within an urban area
When are you allowed to use the hooter?
When necessary for safety purposes
What are the requirements for a hooter?
Must produce a sound that is clearly audible to a person of normal hearing from a distance of 90m
It may not be a tune or siren
