Rule 2

A

When there are only 2 elements in the compound, then the compound name ends in -ide.
Ex: Magnesium + fluorine = Magnesium fluoride

Rule 3

A

When 3 or more elements combine and one of them is oxygen, the compound name ends in -ate/-ite and the oxygen is ignored.
Ex: Zinc + nitrogen + oxygen = Zinc nitrate

A

When 3 or more elements combine and 2 of them are hydrogen and oxygen, the name ends with -hydroxide.
Ex: Calcium + oxygen + hydrogen = Calcium hydroxide
