Usage of combing vowels
A
- A combining vowel is used to combine a root to a root
Ex: Hept-O-megal -y = heptomegaly - A combining vowel is used to join a root to a suffix ONLY if the suffix begins with a consonant
Ex: hepat-o-logy = hepatology - If the suffix begins with a vowel, the combining vowel is typically omitted.
Ex: hepat-Oma=hepatoma

- If a prefix ends with a vowel and the following root or suffix begins with a vowel, the final vowel of the prefix is typically omitted
Ex: meso + enter + on = mesenteron - If a root ends with the same vowel that the following root or suffix begins with, the final vowel of the root is usually omitted
Ex: peri + cardi + itis = pericarditis

- The last consonants of a prefix is a changed to the same consonant as the following root
Ex: dis+fusate = diffusate - The last consonant is changed to another consonant which allows the combination to be pronounced more easily
Ex: in+perfect = imperfect
