Etymology
The Study of the origins and historical meanings of words
Compound words
Terms that are created by joining together word elements taken from different Greek and/or Latin words. Constructed from word elements like prefixes, roots, and suffixes
Loan words
Latin and Greek word that has been adopted into English without any significant changes in spelling
Eponym
Term used for anything which is derived from the name of a particular person.
Transliteration
The transposition of a word from one language to another
Derivative
Word that is obtained from another language
Inflection
Modification of a word by adding different endings to the word in order to change the grammatical function of the word.
Ex:
Digitus = 2nd finger
Digiti = Fingers
Root
Fundamental part of a Greek or Latin word that expresses the basic meaning of Greek or Latin words
Prefix
Is a one or two syllable word elements attached to the beginning term, which modifies the meaning of a word
Suffix
Is a one or two syllable word element appended to the end of a medical term in order to modify its meaning
Combining vowel
Used to join a root to another root or to a suffix
Combining form
A root with a combing vowel
Assimilation
Final letter is sometimes changed in response to the first letter of the roots they are attached to.
Elision
Omission of a letter from a word element in order to make the word easier to pronounce
Vowel graduation
Internal vowel change that occurs to make new words
Ex: sing sang song sung
