Rule Utilitarianism Flashcards
Who created rule utilitarianism?
John Stuart Mills (inspired by Bentham!)
What are the two adaptations made in rule to act utilitarianism?
- Pleasure is qualitative
- Moral framework needed
How does Mills show that pleasure is qualitative + quote?
Higher pleasures = pleasures of the mind e.g. reading, poetry
Lower pleasures = pleasures of the body e.g. sex, food
QUOTE: “Better to be a human dissatisfied than a pig satisfied.”
How does Mills show that morality needs a framework?
He introduces rules! These rules are established on producing the greatest happiness for the greatest number.
Enables you to apply consistent ethics in all situations so your actions always result in moral happiness.
Strong vs weak rule utilitarianism.
Strong = rules are absolute.
Weak = can make exceptions to rules if exception will lead to the greatest good for the greatest number of people.
