Section 1 - Abandonment
The act of any runner who leaves the base path, after reaching first base, heading for his dugout or defensive position believing there is no further play.
Section 2 - Appeal
The act of a player or coach claiming a violation of the rules by the opposing team or misinterpretation of them by the umpires. An appeal may be any act that unmistakably indicates an appeal.
Section 3 - Balk
An illegal act by the pitcher with a runner or runners on base entitling all runners to advance one base.
Section 4 - Ball
A pitch or partial delivery that does not enter the strike zone in flight and meets one of five criteria.
Section 5 - Base
One of four points that must be touched by a runner in order to score a run; more usually applied to the canvas or rubberized bags except for the rubber home plate.
Section 6 - Base Coach
A team member or a coach, in proper uniform, who is stationed in the coach’s box at first or third base.
Section 7 - Base on Balls
An award of first base granted to a batter who, during the time at bat, receives four pitches outside the strike zone OR;
following a signal from the defensive team’s head coach to the umpire that the coach intends to intentionally walk the batter.
Section 8 - Batter
The offensive player positioned in the batter’s box.
Section 9 - Batter’s Box
The area within which the batter is positioned when at bat.
Section 10 - Batter-Runner
A term that identifies the offensive player who has just finished the time at bat and is either put out or becomes a runner before the play ends.
Section 11 - Battery
The pitcher and catcher.
Section 12 - Bench or Dugout
The area reserved for team personnel in proper uniform engaged in the game.
Section 13 - Bullpen
Definition
The area in foul or dead-ball territory where substitute pitchers, catchers and other players warm up.
Section 13 - Bullpen
Restrictions (4 Primary)
Must contains two regulation pitching rubbers and plates.
Must have seating for 4-6 people.
Both sides need to be comparable.
Pitchers should be warmed up in the designated bullpen area, not in another facility or location out of sight and sound of the playing field.
Section 14 - Bunt
A legally batted ball, not swung at but intentionally met with the bat and tapped within the infield.
Section 15 - Called Game
One in which, for any reason, the umpire-in-chief terminates play.
Section 16 - Catch
Definition
he act of a fielder in getting secure possession in the hand or glove of a ball in flight and firmly holding it, providing the fielder does not use the cap, protector, pocket or any other part of the uniform in getting possession.
Section 16 - Catch
The only two circumstances that may be interpreted as creating a voluntary and intentional release.
1 - When the momentum of the catch is complete.
(i.e., the fielder has reversed his direction and is running the ball back toward the infield)
2 - When the fielder is reaching for the ball to make a throw.
Section 16 - Catch
Which 3 situations in the rule book forfeit a catch, by rule?
If, simultaneously with or immediately after contact with the ball, the fielder collides with a player or fence or falls down and, as a result,
drops the ball.
If a fielder touches a fly ball that then hits a member of the
offensive team or an umpire and then is caught by that fielder or another
defensive player.
If either foot is touching dead-ball territory when the catch is made.
Section 17 - Catcher
The fielder who takes a position behind home plate.
