Six phases of RTC
Fend off procedures - single carriageway
Initial attendance – road closure
1st appliance fends off 25m before incident across both lanes. Cones are then placed 25-75m from the other side of the incident to close the road from the other direction until a 2nd appliance arrives. 25m for roads up to 30mph 75m for roads 40-60mph.

Fend and Cone off procedure at an incident on a motorway
Initial fend off and safety zone
1st appliance fends off 25m from incident and place 5 cones at 12.5m intervals up to and past the incident to create a safe working area around the incident, and utilising the appliance for full protection.

Multi-Lane – One/Two Lane Closure
2nd appliance positions 125m from the 1st and tapers from the hard shoulder out to the effected lane up to 25m before the 1st appliance using their 8 cones. Use the 3 cones from the 1st appliance to fill the 25m gap to the 1st appliance.

Multi-Lane – One/Two Lane Closure
Driver stays in 2nd appliance and moves up to 25m from 1st appliance once coning completed

Multi-Lane – Three Lane Closure
3rd appliance fends off 50m from the furthest cone from the incident across the lanes to close. 5 cones are placed from the hard shoulder out to lane to be closed. Move all the previous cones out to create the new taper over the required lanes.

Move the 3rd appliance up to 25m behind 2nd. Now have 200m safe area

Only to be used for life critical rescue. More than 5 lanes. Oncoming appliances must
