1.1 Beneficence
Literally ‘doing good’. One of the 99 names of Allah and belief about his nature, the generosity that Allah shows to humans.
1.1 Monotheism
Belief in one God
1.11 Just
The belief that God is fair
1.12 Adalat
The belief that Allah is just/fair in Shi’a Islam. One of the 5 Roots of Usul ad-DIn
1.13 Merciful
God’s willingness to forgive the sins of those who repent
1.14 Immanent
The belief that God is close to humanity and involved in the world
1.15 Transcendent
The belief that God exists outside of time and space, beyond the human realm
1.16 One God
He is Allah, the One and Only; Allah, the Eternal, Absolute; None is born of Him, nor is He born; And there is no one like him. Surah 112
1.17 Shows God Is Just
The Qur’an says; ‘Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in it themselves.’

The Qur’an says; ‘God is nearer to us than our jugular vein.’
1.19 The Declaration Of Faith
The Shahadah is ‘There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger.’ Shi’a Muslims add ‘And Ali is the friend of God.’

2.1 Hajj
The annual pilgrimage to Makkah; remembering the actions of Ibrahim and Hajira. Muslims should try to make at least once in their lifetime.
2.1 Prophet
A person who shares the message of God.
2.11 Sunnah
The actions and traditions of Muhammad.
2.12 Hadith
The written record of Muhammad’s sunnah; his actions and sayings. Second most important source of authority after the Qur’an.
2.13 Recitation
Reciting (saying out loud) verses of the Qur’an.
2.14 Why Are There Prophets?
The Qur’an says; ‘And for every nation is a messenger.’
2.15 Ibrahim’S Importance
The Qur’an says; ‘Allah took Abraham as an intimate friend.’
2.16 Muhammad’S Importance
The Qur’an says; ‘Muhammad is not the father of any one of your men, but the Messenger of Allah and the seal of the prophets.’
2.2 Risalah
The belief in prophets and their importance as messengers of God.
2.3 Revelation
When God is revealed to humans; belief that Allah shows his nature through the words of the Qur’an.
2.4 Adam
The first prophet, considered to be the father of the human race, Adam made a mistake but admitted it and received forgiveness.
2.5 Ibrahim
An important prophet, known for his obedience to Allah, rebuilt the Ka’aba. Ibrahim’s actions are remembered during Hajj and on the festival of Id-ul Adha.
2.6 Muhammad
The last and greatest of the prophets. He received the Qur’an, his Sunnah and Hadith are important sources of authority for Muslims.
2.7 Sacrifice
To give something important as an offering to another, e.g Ibrahim being prepared to kill Ishmael for God.
2.8 The Night Journey
Before Muhammad fled to Makkah he was taken on a miraculous journey to Jerusalem and heaven, it was on this journey that he received the knowledge that Muslims should pray 5 times a day.
2.9 The Night Of Power
The night on which Muhammad received the first of the revelations of the Qur’an from the Angel Jibril.
3.1 Sunni
Muslims who believe that Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali (the Caliphs) should be elected to lead Islam after the death of Muhammad.
3.2 Shi’A
Muslims who believe in the Imamate, people chosen by Allah to lead Islam after Muhammad’s death.
3.3 Imamate
Shi’a belief in the twelve imams who succeeded Muhammad as the leaders of Islam, one of the 5 Roots of Usul ad-Din. Ali was the first.
3.4 Caliph
The elected leader of Sunni Islam.
3.5 6 Articles Of Faith
The foundations of faith in Sunni Islam; six key beliefs: Tawhid, Angels, Holy Books, Prophethood, Akhirah (life after death including day of judgement), Predestination (supremacy of God’s will)
3.6 5 Roots Of Usul Ad-Din
The foundations of the faith in Shi’a Islam; five key beliefs: Tawhid, Adalat, prophethood, imamate, resurrection.
4.1 Qur’An
Holy book and most important source of authority. It was revealed to the prophet Muhammad and is the final revelation of God to humankind.
4.2 The Gospel
Holy book/source of authority. It contains the ‘good news’ about Isa (Jesus) who was a prophet of Allah.
4.3 The Psalms
Holy book/source of authority. Sacred prayer and poems written by King David, a prophet of Allah
4.4 The Scrolls Of Abraham
Holy book/source of authority. Individual revelations to Ibrahim that were written on parchment but have perished.
4.5 The Torah
Holy book/source of authority. Given by God to the prophet Musa (Moses) on Mount Sinai.
4.6 Why Is The Qur’An The Most Important?
The Qur’an says; ‘This is the Book about which there is no doubt.’
4.7 When Was The Qur’An Revealed?
The Qur’an says; ‘We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Power. The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.’
5.1 Angels
They are spiritual beings created from elements of light. They gave God’s messages to the prophets and watch over humans.
5.2 Mika’Il
Angel who gives spiritual and material help to humans; on Judgement Day he will assist with the weighing of a person’s deeds.
5.3 Jibril
Angel who dictated the Qur’an to Muhammad; on judgement day he will assist with the weighing of a person’s deeds.
5.4 Book Of Deeds
A record of a person’s actions in life, kept by angels and given to God on Judgement Day.
5.5 Angels
‘For each one are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah.’ (Qur’an)
6.1 Predestination
The belief that everything that happens has been already decided by Allah.
6.2 Day Of Judgement
The day when Allah will decide about individual deeds and on reward or punishment.
6.3 Human Freedom
Humans have control over their thoughts, feelings and actions.
6.4 Human Accountability
The belief that everyone must take responsibility for their actions and will be questioned about them on the Day of Judgement.
6.5 Human Responsibility
Humans are responsible for most of what they do because they have free will and so will be accountable on the Day of judgement.

7.1 Akhirah
The belief in life after death.
7.2 Heaven
Called Paradise; Allah’s reward after death to those who have been faithful to him and who have repented of their sins.
7.3 Hell
It is a place of great suffering after death for those who have rejected the Qur’an’s teachings and have led a wicked life. For some it will last forever.
7.4 Resurrection
The belief that after death, all people will be raised from the dead to face judgement.
