RS Flashcards
What was the life of St Ignatius
Born 1491
Raised as a knight and lived a sinful life until the Battle of Pamplona in 1521 where he was hit by a cannon ball breaking his leg and ended up surviving being bed ridden for months. In his boredom he read two books, the life of the saints and the life of christ. When he thought about living like christ and the saints it brang him joy for a long time compared to when thinking about life as a knight which would only give him temporary joy but then he would become sad. He then made a decision that when he was better he was going to live a life that rivalled that of the saints so he left loyola and headed to monseratt. On his way he gave away all his clothes to the poor and instead wore rags so that he could understand what it was like to be poor. He gave away his sword to instead for Mary and God. On his way he got into an argument with a Moor and controlled himself and decided to not kill him. He went to a cave in Monseratt where he wrote the spiritual excercises and repented for his sins. He felt the pressure of trying to be like the saints and wanted to end his life but then thought that he should be himself instead of trying to be like all the other great saints. He left the cave and went to get an education so that he could study theology in university. He made friends who had the same passion as he did and eventually the Jesuits were made.
