RR16 Flashcards
1
Q
Explain two types of genetic analysis
A
- Forward genetic analysis : “what gene is responsible for mutant?” - disrupt homeostasis based on random mutation. Start with phenotype and go to gene
- Reverse genetic analysis: “what is consequence of mutant on the organism?” - disrupt activity of specific gene product to assess it’s function. start with mutant and go to phenotype
2
Q
What are transgenes?
A
Aritfically integrated gene
- position it in different positions to see how it impacts gene expression
- Important in understanding gene expression patterns
3
Q
Explain CRISPPR/Cas9
A
- Cas 9 protein cuts DNA, Guide RNA recognizes DNA sequence to be edited
- Scientists create specific guide RNA for ‘problem’ and attach it to Cas9
Complex is introduced to target cell - cut DNA at target sequence
Now have the target sequence to be edited by scientists
