RPS Flashcards

1
Q

What are the power supplies for RPS channels and what happens on a loss of power to channel?

A

RS-1/2/3/4 supply channels A - D respectively.

A loss of power to channel will trip associated channel. If loss of power to 2+ channels, reactor will trip.

Q

What is the RPS trip logic? What if channel is bypassed?

A

2 out of 4 channel trips will trip the reactor and open all CRD breakers (AC, DC, and Electronic).

If channel is bypassed, then changes to 2 of 3 logic.

A

SD Bypass bypasses the low RCS pressure and RCP status trips to allow CRD positioning and testing at low RCS pressures or when RCPs off.

High RCS pressure trip (1720#)

High power trip (5%)

Q

What initiates power/pump trip?

A
  • One pump per loop and RX power >/= 55%
  • No pumps in a loop and power > 0%

Underpower relay will drop out when power is 25 to 50% of full load (sheared shaft) or pump breaker open.

Q

What are the design criteria for RPS?

A

Single Failure - No single failure will prevent a protection system from fulfilling its protective functions or initiate unnecessary protective action.

Redundancy - All protection channels are implemented by redundant sensors, measuring channels, logic and actuation devices.

Independence - Electrically independent

Separation - RPS channels are physically separated and electrically isolated from other instrumentation.

Manual Trip - Manual trip switches independent of auto trips.

Manual Testing - Test methods

Environment - Environmentally qualified

Seismic

Loss of Power - Loss of power will result in channel trip.

Module Removal - Removal of module will cause channel trip.

Q

What is the purpose of the buffer amplifier?

A

Provide electrical independence and separation for analog signal. Faults outside of RPS cabinets are not reflected into channel.

Q

What is purpose of contact buffer?

A

Communicate status of remote equipment or instrumentation to RPS and provide electrical isolation for digital signals originating outside the system.

11
Q

How is power and imbalance signal generated?

A

linear amplifier signals from top and bottom detector are sent to summer/difference module. They are summed for total power reading and difference for imbalance.

12
Q

How is RCP status obtained in RPS?

A

Contact monitors are used to monitor RCP status and input into power to pumps and high power trip setpoint based on pump configuration.

13
Q

What is the purpose of high power/imbalance/flow?

A

Trips when power is too high for associated RCS flow. RCP status plays in to this trip due to lowering flow. If at 100% and RCP trip, RX will trip due to this protection.

Q

What is the purpose of the RX Trip Module?

A

Provides light indication of channels tripped. Provides manual bypass function and performs channel and system functions.

15
Q

Describe how Rx Trip Module provides a trip signal.

A

RTM provides the interfac between RPS and trip devices in the control rod drive system.

A trip de-energizes the K relay opens associated contact which ultimately opens the K contacts in the UV string.

16
Q

What trips protect the reactor during startup accident?

A

Protected by High pressure or high flux trip.

17
Q

What trips protect against a moderator dilution?

A

ICS in manual would be high pressure trip.

18
Q

What trips protect core during main steam line break?

A

Primary protection is low RCS pressure. Backup is high flux.

19
Q

What trips protect against tube rupture or loss of coolant?

A

Tube rupture - low RCS pressure

LOCA - low RCS pressure and backup is high RB pressure

20
Q

What trips protect against a rod ejection?

A

Low reactivity addition rates protected by high RCS pressure.

High reactivity addition rates protected by high flux trip.

21
Q

What does each RPS trip protect against?

A

High Power (104.9%) - fuel cladding

Power/Pumps - DNBR

High power/imbalance/flow - DNBR

High RCS Temp - DNBR

Variable and Low RCS Pressure - DNBR

22
Q

What does the High RCS pressure trip protect against?

A

Trips the reactor on excess reactivity addition during startup or a slow reactivity addition from high power.

23
Q

What is the purpose of the anticipatory reactor trips? Where is the signal for turbine online and MFPs in service generated from?

A

Required following TMI event, it provides a trip in instances where a loss of secondary heat sink would otherwise likely result in a high pressure reactor trip due to RCS response to loss of heat removal capabilities.

Reduces likelihood of challenging the ERV.

Pressure switches in the autostop oil system generates the turbine and MFP signals to contact buffer. Normal indication should be top light on, bottom light off.

Turbine trip > 43% and loss of both MFPs > 9% power are associated ARTS trips.

24
Q

When does the turbine trip bypass bistable close and open? MFPs?

A

Closes on the way down @ 41% which prevents reactor from tripping if turbine trips and opens to enable the reactor trip when power @ 43%.

MFP trip bypass bistable closes when < 7% on way down to prevent tripping reactor and opens > 9% on way up to enable the reactor trip.

25
Q

When is the TR relay de-energized and what occurs as a result?

A

TR relay is de-energized when module is removed or placing the test module in test.

As a result, the TR contact opens and causes a channel trip.

26
Q

How does the channel bypass circuitry work?

A

When channel bypass switch is closed, the CB relay is energized, closing to CB contact and bypassing all trip functions. This signal will feed the other RPS channels and prevent bypassing another channel (Only one RPS channel can be bypassed at a time).

27
Q

What actions are required for inoperable RPS channel per TS 3.3.1?

A

TS 3.3.1 requires 4 channels of RPS for each function to be operable.

If one channel inoperable, place the channel in bypass or trip in 1 hour.

If two channels inoperable, place one channel in bypass and one in trip in 1 hour. Would be in 2 of 2 logic.
