RPD intro Flashcards
RPD is
vs bridge
Removable appliance which replaces 1+ but not an entire arch
Bridges are fixed (fixed partial dentures)
classification of denture
1) support
- mucosa
- tooth
- both
2) tooth loss
- kennedy
3) material type
mucosal denture
- primarily acrylic PMMA
- metal components may be used for strength or clasping
- cheap
- can be modified and added to (can plan ahead depending on tooth prognosis)
- useful as transitional denture
tooth borne denture
Metal framework
Load is through natural teeth
- cobalt chrome
- titanium
- gold alloys
teeth are attached with acrylic PMMA or pink composite
support of tooth borne gained from
occlusal cingulum or incisal rests
- to be purely tooth borne must be bounded saddles
- complex, time consuming, expensive and therefore OH needs to be good
- cannot be modified (ideally)
tooth and mucosa borne
- metal framework
- no distal supporting tooth
- acrylic fitting surface provides support in saddle area
support from rests and mucosa
requriements of RPD
- aesthetics
- mastication
- comfort
- distribute occlusal forces to appropriate structures (through long axis of tooth)
- retentive
- space maintenance
- OVD maintenance
advantages of RPDs
- aesthetics
- functions (speech/mastication- consider shortened dental arch)
- prevention of tooth movement (drifting and overeruption)
- maintenance of OVD
dis of RPDs
- tooth loss greater than when a RPD provided rather than other methods of replacement
- increases plaque accumulation
- caries gingivirus periodontal
- tooth movement
some can be design dependant - damage to tooth tissue
- forces on teeth may impact supporting structures
- wuality of RPD may impact
kennedy class 1
bilateral edentulous area located posterior to natural teeth
mod for each additioonal saddle area
eg mod 2 for 2 additioanl saddle aras
kennedy class 2
unilateral edentulous area located posterior to natural teeth
kennedy class 3
unilateral edentulous area with natural teeth remaining anterior and posterior to its
kennedy class 4
single bilateral edentulous area anterior to the remaining natural teeth (no modifcations!!!!!)
