Q

How is distribution and abundance measured?

A

Using a quadrat
Place randomly or along transect line
Count individuals that are 100% inside quadrat
Must sample 10% of total area

Q

How to calculate population size

A

Total area/ sample area (all quadrats) x number of organisms counted
OR
Total area/ area of 1 quadrat x mean number of organisms per quadrat

Q

Method for random sampling

A
  1. Lay 2 tape measures at right angle to creat grid
  2. Use random number generate to pick 2- number coordinate
  3. Place quadrat at coordinate
  4. Count all organisms of sample species in quadrat
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 for at least 10 quadrats
