How is distribution and abundance measured?
A
Using a quadrat
Place randomly or along transect line
Count individuals that are 100% inside quadrat
Must sample 10% of total area

How to calculate percentage cover
A
No. Of squares covered by organism (at least half covered)/ total number of squares in the quadrat X 100

How to calculate population size
A
Total area/ sample area (all quadrats) x number of organisms counted
OR
Total area/ area of 1 quadrat x mean number of organisms per quadrat

When are transect lines used in sampling?
A
When looking at specific conditions on the environment (e.g. light intensity)

Method for random sampling
A
- Lay 2 tape measures at right angle to creat grid
- Use random number generate to pick 2- number coordinate
- Place quadrat at coordinate
- Count all organisms of sample species in quadrat
- Repeat steps 2-4 for at least 10 quadrats
