RP 8- plant responses Flashcards
what is auxin ?
a hormone in plants- they control the growth of plants by promoting cell division to cause elongation
what is phototropism ?
a plant re-orientating the shoot growth towards a direction of light source
what happens to the seedlings in the dark ?
they grow rapidly to reach the light like they would when they germinate (leaves go small and yellow)
what happens to the seedlings in partial light?
they grow towards the light source
what happens to the seedlings in the full sun
they grown normally, at a similar height to the ones in partial light
what is gravitropism ?
a process of differential growth by a plant in response to gravity pulling on it
how do you set up a test to measure light on plant responses ?
- put cotton wool in a petri dish
- add water and seeds
- allow the seeds to germinate
- make sure you have the same number of seedlings in each dish
what happens to the shoot when seedlings are on the side ?
the shoots grow up- against gravity
what happens to the root when seedlings are on the side ?
the roots grow down- towards gravity
