1550:
-Became Lord President of the council rather than Lord Protectorate due to the negative connotations surrounding it from Somerset.
1551:
-Became Duke of Northumberland
What was he motivated by?
-Political objectives
-Wanted to get Lady Jane Grey on the throne as his son was married to her.
Govt under Northumberland
-Implemented some privy council guidelines, moving away from the concilliar form of govt, drawn up by William Paget
-This allowed him to operate an effective govt for a short amount of time.
-Was already Lord Chamberlain + appointed Sir John Gates to Vice Chamberlain
-Extended the use of the privy council further
How was his relationship with Edward?
-Wanted to ensure Edward was included and wanted to maintain his support.
-Was Great Steward of the King’s household which meant Edward’s household was filled with his own supporters.
-Was able to exert influence over Edward’s decisions.
What did he enlist?
-A peace time army to ensure law + order is kept.
What did Somerset do?
-Attempted to throw a counter coup after being readmitted into the council BUT he failed and was executed.
-Northumberland responded by acting in a dictatorial manner, how Somerset acted before he was removed
What did Northumberland have access to?
-The King’s dry stamp which he could use to affix the kings signature to documents.
