Rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum Flashcards
What is the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Is an internal system of flattened membranous sacs (cisternae)
Are continuous with the nuclear membrane
What is the RER covered in?
Covered in ribosomes
Accounts for the ‘dotted’ appearance and gives in its name
What is the function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Protein synthesis
Transport of proteins
Why are rough endoplasmic reticulum present in large numbers in cells?
Can synthesise large quantities of protein
What is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
Is similar to the RER but has no ribosomes
What is the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
Synthesis of lipids
Transport of lipids
Why do some cells have an extensive ER?
Store large quantities of carbohydrate, protein or fat
Includes liver and secretory cells
Need them to synthesis proteins and lipids
