Mitochondria Flashcards
What is the function of mitochondria?
Release energy in the form of ATP during aerobic respiration
What type of membrane does mitochondria have?
Double membrane
What does the double membrane in mitochondria have?
A narrow, fluid-filled intermembrane space
How is the cristae formed?
Inner membrane is folded inwards to form extension called cristae
What is the function of the cristae?
Increases the surface area for ATP synthesis to occur
Where is the organic matrix located?
Inside the mitochondria
What does the organic matrix contain?
Many chemical compounds
Includes - lipids, proteins, small (70S) ribosomes and a small circle of DNA
Why is their a small circle of DNA in the organic matrix?
Allows self-replication
Response to the energy needs of the cell
Where do stages of aerobic respiration occur?
In the matrix
The inner membrane
Where are large numbers of mitochondria located?
The liver cells
The muscle cells
