Ropework Flashcards
What type of material is this?
Light weight, floats, not strong, not as stretchy as nylon, relatively cheap, makes good heaving lines and dock lines.
Polypropylene
What type of material is this?
Heavy, very stretchy, great for anchoring and mooring, great at absorbing shock loads, expensive
Nylon
What type of material is this?
High strength, low stretch, used for sheets, halyards and general all-round applications, available as three-strand or braided line.
Polyester
What type of knot is this?
Left over right and under, right over left and under
Only used at sea for tying in reef points
Wont securely hold two ropes together
Reef knot
What type of knot is this?
Great for tying two ropes together, even of different thickness
Sheet Bend
What type of knot is this?
Will make a loop that doesn’t come undone
Can be used for nearly everything
The best knot
Bowline
What type of knot is this?
Used to tie a line to a pole
Clove hitch
What type of knot is this?
Similar to clove hitch
Can be quickly slipped to allow repositioning the fender when the pontoon is lower than expected
Fender hitch
what are some uses for a bowline
tying up to a bolard or pillar
Tying sheets to sails or other items
forming loop in end of a rope
what is a reef not used for
joing together 2 ends of a rope
often used for tying down the bunt during refing
Danger of using a reef knot
can slip under tention
What is the use for round turn and 2 half hitches
Tying up to a post, ring or anything else you can put a rope around
secure fenders to a guard rail
Tie up a tow, as it can be undone under tension
What can a rolling hitch be used for
Snubbing the anchor
reliving tention from another line
also good for tying up to bolards
what is a clove hitched used for
tying up to a post, tying a tow on, or attaching fenders to the guardrail
Sheet bend
used for tying two ropes together, can be used on a rope of different diameter
double sheet bend
a more secure version of a sheet bend, used for tying two ropes of different diameters together.
Figure of Eight
Used as a stopper not, or to create a grip point in a rope
What are cleats used for
tying up to a dock or jetty
What are the properties of Kevlar rope
Very strong for its diamiter, will not streach
what are the properties of polyproperyne rope
Streaches, but floats, so good for rope that would end up in the water, for example a dan boy
What are the proerties of nylon
streaches so can aborb force from anchoring, tying up or towing, also sinks so good for anchoring as it wont get caught in the propellor
What are the advantages of a bowline
When used for tying up to a shore cleat it cannot be easily undone under pressure.
Does not easily shake out when used for tying sheets to the clue of the jib or genoa.
What are the disadvantages of a bowline
Not easily undone under pressure so should not be used if this requirement is a possibility.
What are the advantages of a clove hitch
Easy to adjust when used for hanging fenders although an extra half hitch for security is good practice.
Very quick way of tying off to a bollard when conditions require it.
What are the disadvantages of a clove hitch
Not easily undone under pressure.
What are the advantages of a rolling hitch
If a line cannot be undone because it is under tension a rolling hitch can be put around the line and the standing part taken to a winch to release the tension on the line
Useful for snubbing the anchor.
What are the disadvantages of a rolling hitch
difficult to undo under pressure
What are the advantages of a Reef knot
Easy to adjust, tension and simple to use.
What are the disadvantages of a reef knot
can slip
What are the advantages of a sheet bend
Easy to adjust and simple to use
What are the disadvantages of a sheet bend
Can slip or shake out
What are the advantages of a double sheet bend
easy to adjust and simple to use
What are the disadvantages of a double sheet bend
can shake out
what are the advantages of a round turn and two half hitches
easy to tie and can be undone under pressure
what are the disadvantages of a round turn two half hitches
can be undone under pressure, possibly by vandals if used to moor a vessel to an open quay
