Search Rope is used as supervisory tool to maintain?
SEARCH TEAM INTEGRITY
-also used to assist in search and locate units for assistance or relief
When Search Rope should be deployed?
- Large areas such as gymnasiums, ballrooms, convention centers
- complex areas/schools, banks, office areas
- comercial, industrial
- BELOW grade /subways tunnels, basements cellars
What should be used in conjunction with SERACH ROPE?
THERMAL IMAGING CAMERA
SEARCH ROPE:
- 5/16 INCH DIAMTERE
- white nylon
- 200 FEET LONG
- newly issued–KERNMANTLE -DOUBLE ACTION SNAP HOOK at WORKING END and snap hook that secures rope to bag
this HELPS AVOID ROPE BEING PACKED FROM WRONG END

YELLOW BAG marked with COMPANY ID NUMBER
SHRINKAGE OF SEARCH ROPE?
-shrinkage and knots…may shorten by 25 feet or more (LSR 8-10)
Intervals of distance knots ?
25 feet
-single knot- 25 feet
-double knot- 50 feet
-3 knots - 75 feet
4 knots - 100 feet
5 knots - 125
6 knots - 150
7 knots - 175 (LAST SET)
spacing between distance knots is 6 INCHES
SINGLE DIRECTION KNOT- 18 INCHES BEFORE DISTANCE KNOT
Which KNOT will ALWAYS be closer to tie off?
DIRECTIONAL KNOT

Which knot will NOT have directional knot?
25 Ft knot
Advantages of Search Rope?
- point of reference
- allows fast unit to quickly locate and assist member in distress
- Assist in searching for fire or victims
- allows for quickly locating members in need of assistance
When a UNIT DEPLOYS a search rope, must notify ?
IC

SUBSTANTIAL/NON MOVABLE OBJECT IN A CLEAR, safe environment (floor below, enclosed staircase , objects on sidewalk –lampposts, mailboxes , street signs)
remember, an area that is CLEAR AT THE BEGINNING of an operation may NOT BE CLEAR WHEN YOU RETURN
Bag can be worn OVER SHOULDER or CARRIED BY HAND ..
OFFICER CONTROLLING search pays out rope WHILE KEEPING TAUT , maintaining hand on rope at all times
Rope should be tied off at intervals, to keep it taut and off the floor…the rope shall be maintained ?
1-2 FEET off the ground
-when changing direction or GRADE, the rope shall be TIED OFF…..allows member to traverse the same ground when exiting
______contact is to be maintained at all times?
VOICE CONTACT
IF more than 200 feet of rope is needed, attach the snap hook of a second length of rope to the snap hook of the first (you CAN COMBINE ROPES)
IF teams search is interrupted, TIE OFF LINE and LEAVE BAG with remainder of rope..another unit can use
What if there is nothing to tie off?
Take A FEW wraps around bag with the rope and leave it in place
Who should remain cognizant AMOUNT of search rope deployed?
OFFICER
-BY USING DISTANCE KNOTS and transmit info to members searching on rope and to the IC OR FIRE SECTOR SUPERVISOR
AMOUNT deployed MAY NOT BE INDICATION of members’ location (maze, turns , etc.)…you may have deployed 100 feet and only traveled 30 feet
Who decides if member’s will conduct searches OFF ROPE?
OFFICER
factors to consider:
- size of area
- configuration (maze like)
- EXPERIENCE
- HEAT/SMOKE conditions
- ability to stay within VOICE CONTACT
Operational considerations:
- maintain rope taut
- keep track of FF locations
- use TIC to ACCOUNT FOR MEMBERS
- use TIC to monitor fire conditions
- refrain from searching areas distant from rope
Under MOST conditions , members on search team limited to ?
3 members (MOST CONDITIONS)
CHECK NEXT CARD
ANY UNIT (other than 1ST ALARM) receiving orders to search an area REQUIRING a search rope….?
shall MAINTAIN UNIT INTEGRITY and will perform this function with ALL MEMBERS
-Officer and 2 FF’s will operate as FIRST SEARCH TEAM
remaining members should:
- standby as BACK UP TEAM
- monitor search team progress
- monitor HT transmissions
- monitor fire conditions
- be ready to assist the search team with recovery/tools
- monitor the team’s on air time
If it becomes necessary to relieve unit at FORWARD POINT OF SEARCH, relieving company should enter area with _______in contact with the rope (IF POSSIBLE). COMPANY being relieved should exit with ——–HAND in contact with rope (IF POSSIBLE)?

in this manner, companies entering and leaving will be on OPPOSITE SIDES OF ROPE
RELIEVING COMPANY SHOULD COMMUNICATE WITH COMPANY BEING RELIEVED IN REGARDS TO AREAS SEARCHED
Company being relieved (if possible) must TIE OFF search rope and leave bag where search was discontinued…relief company should continue from that point …
OFFICERs should account for ALL MEMBERS , when unit is relieved or completed their assignment
-search tactics with rope are very different from without rope
Responsibility of SEARCH OFFICER TO ?
maintain VERBAL CONTACT (mentioned twice) with ALL MEMBERS SEARCHING
-when searching OFF ROPE, members should advise officer of area searched and results …officer will relay to IC
Search rope used ?
ONLY FOR SEARCH
-not lifting or lowering
Inspect Search Rope?
AFTER EACH USE
repack MONTHLY
PACKING THE ROPE:
- ensure rope is DRY
- clean surface, remove kinks and COIL CLOCKWISE beginning with SINGLE KNOT END (GOES IN LAST–Middle of coil)
- secure clip at 7 knots end to ‘D’ ring at bottom of bag
- “D” ring ALERT MEMBERS WHEN THEY ARE AT END OF ROPE
- coil rope into case counter clockwise
-pass hook through hole in the cover and SNAP IT TO THE RING ON TOP
