Root Operation Definitions Parts 5-6 Flashcards
Putting in a non-biological device that monitors, assists, performs or prevents a physiological function but does not physically take the place of a body part
Insertion
Putting in or on biological or synthetic material that physically takes the place and/or function of all or a portion of a body part
The objective of procedures coded to the root operation is to put in a device that takes the place of some or all of a body part.
Replacement
Putting in or on biologic or synthetic material that physically reinforces and/or augments the function of a portion of a body part
The body part may have been taken out during a previous procedure, but is not taken out as part of the _________ procedure.
Supplement
Taking out or off a device from a body part and putting back an identical or similar device in or on the same body part without cutting or puncturing the skin or a mucous membrane
Procedures are coded using the approach External
Similar device is exchanged without making a new incision or puncture. Typical procedures include exchange of drainage devices and feeding devices.
Change
Taking out or off a device from a body part
Removal
Correcting, to the extent possible, a malfunctioning or displaced device
Can include correcting a malfunctioning device by taking out and/or putting in part of the device
Correct the position or function of a previously placed device, without taking the entire device out and putting a whole new device in its place.
Revision
Visually and/or manually exploring a body part
If multiple tubular body parts are inspected, the most distal body part inspected is coded. If multiple non-tubular body parts in a region are inspected, the body part that specifies the entire area inspected is coded.
Inspection
Locating the route of passage of electrical impulses and/or locating functional areas in a body part
Map
Stopping, or attempting to stop, postprocedural or other acute bleeding
If an attempt to stop postprocedural or other acute bleeding is initially unsuccessful, and to stop the bleeding requires performing any of the definitive root operations Bypass, Detachment, Excision, Extraction, Reposition, Replacement, or Resection, then that root operation is coded
The site of the bleeding is coded as an anatomical region and not to a specific body part
Control
Restoring, to the extent possible, a body part to its normal anatomic structure and function
Used only when the method to accomplish the repair is not one of the other root operations
Functions as the “not elsewhere classified (NEC)” root operation, to be used when the procedure performed does not meet the definition of one of the other root operations.
Repair
Joining together portions of an articular body part rendering the articular body part immobile
The body part is joined together by fixation device, bone graft, or other means
Only performed on the joints.
Fusion
Modifying the natural anatomic structure of a body part without affecting the function of the body part
Principal purpose is to improve appearance
Alteration
Putting in or on biological or synthetic material to form a new body part that to the extent possible replicates the anatomic structure or function of an absent body part
Used for gender reassignment surgery and corrective procedures in individuals with congenital anomalies
