Q

Love as a transformative force: changes in Romeo and Juliet’s characters

A

The changes in Romeo and Juliet’s personalities hints at the positive effects that love can have on people, and therefore society.

Romeo becomes more “effeminate” refusing to fight. Although at the time this would have been condemned and viewed as an act of betrayal of one’s family or honour, this hints towards a positive change in Romeo as he acts on love rather than hate. Perhaps Shakespeare is hinting that falling in love can change one’s perspective on the world for the better - if more people acted on love and allowed love to flourish, the violence and conflict that led to death and barbarity in Verona could be contained and decreased.

Furthermore, Juliet becomes arguably more ‘masculine’ or rather more assertive. She takes the reins in her own hands and behind to dictate her own life - although at times she was reckless and impulsive, much like Romeo, which leads to their deaths, there were also signs of her being powerful and brave which are positive traits to have. Perhaps Shakespeare is demonstrating the way in which young women, when liberated by a powerful force such as love, they are happier and stronger. Juliet can be philiophical questioning the conflict “bred of an airy word” and “what’s in a name?” - since philisophical and critical thought leads to development and change in society for the better this could be what this is a show of.
