romeo Flashcards
Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night
Rhetorical question - change in tone/mood - he was only just ‘heart-broken’ over Rosaline. Love now more ‘real’
O brawling love, O loving hate
He uses the oxymoron ‘loving hate’ to show his contrasting feelings. The parallels drawn by Romeo at the start of the play foreshadow the violence of love between Romeo and Juliet.
The reason I have to love thee does much excuse the appertaining rage to such a greeting
Verb ‘love’ contrasts abstract noun ‘rage’ to show conflicting emotions (Romeo/Tybalt) before the scene descends into violence.
Fire-eyed fury be my conduct now
Alliteration, personification - Romeo is now vengeful and violent after Mercutio’s death.
