mercutio Flashcards
If love be rough with you, be rough with love; Prick love for pricking
Repetition - using innuendo to combat Romeo’s misery and melodrama
Romeo! humours! madman! passion! lover!
A range of exclamations shows the complexity of love and its closeness to hate. Juxtaposition. Love = madness
Why, is not this better now than groaning for love? Now art thou sociable, now art thou Romeo
Verb ‘groaning’ - coarse, sexual humour, praising Romeo for joining in the lighthearted moment. Also, signs that Mercutio cares about Romeo and can tell when he’s being himself. Repetition.
Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man
Pun - ‘grave’ It could mean that Romeo will find him to be a ‘serious’ man tomorrow, or that he will find him dead and in the grave tomorrow.
