Romeo Flashcards
Act 1, Scene 1 (1)
“O brawling love, O loving hate”
His mind is in a state of disarray. Oxymoronic reference. Loves the idea of being in love, though he feels very conflicted about the reality of it. Confused, disoriented and disappointed by his present reality of love.
“O heavy lightness” … “Feather of lead, …”
Lightweight feeling reflects the joy it should feel; however, his melancholy feeling of lead is what he feels when his love is unrequited.
Act 1, Scene 1 (2)
“…gladly fled from me” (Benvolio)
“Thou canst not teach me to forget”
Description from Benvolio describes the mental state of Romeo. Very forlorn and anguished.
Dramatic irony – he will soon move onto Juliet and project his feelings from Rosaline onto her.

Act 1, Scene 5 (2)
Act 2, Scene 1

“That last is true”: the frankness elicits honesty between the two men, presenting their relationship as trustworthy and authentic.
“Feasting with mine enemy”: his way of introducing Juliet reveals that he acknowledges the feud between the two families, so much so that it even defines his love for her.
“I pray, / That thou consent to marry us today.” His direct request to the Friar demonstrates their close relationship – metaphor is unnecessary
“I stand on sudden haste”: there is a rush for Romeo to marry Juliet.
