Juliet – Romeo and Juliet Flashcards
Act 1, Scene 2
“She hath not seen the change of 14 years”
She is 13.
Conversations about Juliet and her future do not involve her, so her life is dictated by her father. Lack of autonomy. The third time that we see women silenced, only serving as props to reinforce male power and control.
Act 1, Scene 3
“It is an honour that I dream not of.”
Only responds to questions when directly asked.
she appreciates the benefit and privilege of the marriage, though she does not actually wish to be married. However, it’s possible that she has deeply thought and dreamt about it, but doesn’t want to say so. Not considered the prospect of it before. Has no choice.
Pretends that because her mother has never discussed marriage with her, she has never considered it because she’s a dutiful daughter that’s honourable to her parents. Conduct books that detail how women are supposed to behave.
“Dream not of”: innocence or defiance. Her messages are subtly duplicitous (secretly show defiance).
