Republic
a form of government in which power rests with citizens who have the right to vote for their leaders.
Patrician
wealthy landowners who held most of the power in early Rome.
Plebeian
the common farmers, artisans, and merchants who made up the majority of the population in early Rome.
Tribune
The elected representatives in the Roman republic.
Consul
Two elected leaders of Rome. Like kings, they commanded the army and directed the government.
Senate
300 members chosen from the upper class that form part of the aristocratic branch. members have both legislative and administrative functions
Dictator
In times of crisis, Rome could elect a leader who had absolute power to make laws and command the army. Called a dictator, his power lasted for only six months. Dictators were chosen by the consuls and then elected by the senate.
Legion
the Roman army was made up of large military units called legions. The Roman legion was made up of some 5,000 heavily armed foot soldiers (infantry).
Punic Wars
Three wars fought between Rome and Carthage. These wars were fought between 264 and 146 BCE.
Hannibal
Hannibal was a brilliant military strategist who led the Carthaginians against Rome during the second Punic War.
Julius Caesar
An influential military leader who will assume total control of Rome effectively ending the republic period and ushering in the age of the Roman Empire.
Triumvirate
A group of three leaders in Rome who align themselves in order to maintain power and control.
Augustus
The first emperor of Rome
Pax Romana
A period of Roman peace lasting roughly 200 years.
Inflation
a drastic drop in the value of money coupled with a rise in prices.
