How did conquest change the Roman Army?
Changed the character of the Roman Army
The citizen soldier who had been the backbone of the army and loyal to the state.
They were replaced by professional soldiers who fought for pay, booty, land and were loyal only to their commanders
How did expansion effect businesses and merchants.
They couldn’t compete with slave labor. They lost their land and jobs and were forced to attach themselves to “Patrons” and sold their vote for food and jobs.
How did expansion effect nobles?
Cheaply acquired great amounts of land, often illegally. Used slave labor on the plantations also known as Latifundia
How did expansion effect the government?
Provincial Governors acquired huge fortunes by exploiting the provinces.
