Sonata Form
A form used for the first movement of a sonata or symphony.
Lied
Solo voice and piano. Text is in German and the verses could be strophic or through composed.
Piano Trio.
Piano and two other instruments such as violin and cello. All three had a powerful sound and could sustain their own section in the trio.
Nationalism
Music incorporates elements of fold music from the composers country
Song cycle
Group of songs linked together by common theme. Usually composed by piano but sometimes small ensemble or full orchestra.
Leitmotiv
A Leitmotiv is a theme associated with a particular character or elements of the plot. Wagner common use of chromaticism, harmonies
and leitmotiv were what made his operas notable.
Tierce de picardie
This is when a piece of music is played in the minor key throughout but finishes on a major chord.
Dominant 7th
This is when chord 5 (V) is decorated with an additional note – the 7th of the chord (V7).
You will usually hear this chord at a perfect cadence.
Harmonic Minor scale
This is a minor scale which shares the same key signature as the relative major but the 7th note is raised by a semitone ascending and descending.
Melodic minor scale
This is a minor scale which shares the same key signature as the relative major but the 6thand 7thnotes are raised by a semitone on the way up and then lowered on the way down.
