Plainchant

A

Early church music, known as plainchant, was sung without accompaniment, a cappella. These f lowing melodies usually lie within the range of an octave and move smoothly in step rather than by leap. The rhythms are irregular,freely following the natural rhythms and stresses of the Latin words to which this music is sung.

Mass

The Mass is part of the Roman Catholic Church Service – making it sacred music. It is the setting of Latin text written for four or five voices (SATB). The same text is always used. It is usually sung a cappella.
