Reneissance Flashcards
Modes
Before major and minor tonality was established in the Baroque period, music was modal. Modes were used to compose both vocal and instrumental music.
Plainchant
Early church music, known as plainchant, was sung without accompaniment, a cappella. These f lowing melodies usually lie within the range of an octave and move smoothly in step rather than by leap. The rhythms are irregular, freely following the natural rhythms and stresses of the Latin words to which this music is sung.
Mass
The Mass is part of the Roman Catholic Church Service – making it sacred music. It is the setting of Latin text written for four or five voices (SATB). The same text is always used. It is usually sung a cappella.
Motet
polyphonic sacred choral composition
which, in the Renaissance period, was sung a cappella. The text is in Latin.
Anthem
Short sacred choral piece sung in English.
Sometimes sung by a choir unaccompanied (a cappella) and features solo parts
