they are in sin
There are 5 rhetorical questions Paul asks in vv. 1 - 9. What are they?
1) What advantage was there to being Jew?
2) Does the fact that some within Israel didn’t follow the Lord faithfully suggest God was not faithful to His covenant people?
3) When God judges the unrighteous, does their sin highlight God’s righteousness?
4) Isn’t the unrighteousness of a Jew actually helping God?
5) Are we the Jews better than Gentiles when it comes to judgment and righteousness and heaven?
Paul revealed ALL people are under sin in v. 9, then he quotes the OT reinforcing that statement in vv.3:10-18. What is the main emphasis 3:11?
there is none righteous, no one who understands and no one who seeks for God.
The law applies to those to whom it was given. What is its purpose? v.3:19
to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God. (every mouth may be shut)
No one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. Why?
The law simply shows us how sinful we are. (Knowledge of sin)
God has shown us a way to be made right with him without keeping the requirements of the law. How? v. 3:21-22
We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are (there is no distinction)
Paul made a definitive statement about the spiritual state of all mankind. What is it? v. 3:23

How are people made right with God? v. 3:25
when they believe that Jesus sacrificed His life, shedding his blood. (propitiation)

so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
How is man justified (made right) with God? v. 3:28
by faith apart from works of the Law.
Paul asked a rhetorical question, “if we emphasize faith, does this mean that we can forget about the law?” What was his answer and why? v. 3:31
Of course not! May it never be! Through faith we are actually establishing the Law (we truly fulfill the law)
