Studies that concern children placed in care because their parents cannot look after them.
Rutters research on ERA study - Procedures
Rutter had followed a group of 165 Romanian orphans for many years as part of the ERA study. (Longitudinal) . The orphans were adopted by families in the UK.
Aim of Rutters study
The aim of the ERA has been to investigate the extent to which good care could make up for poor early experiences in institutions. A group of 52 children from the UK adopted around the same time had served as a control group.
Findings of rutters study
Mean IQ of children adopted later were lower than those adopted earlier. Those adopted 6 months later showed signs of disinhibited attatchment. Symptoms include attention-seeking, clingineed and social behaviour directed indiscriminately towards all adults familiar and unfamiliar.
