Influence Of Early Attatchment On Later Relationships Flashcards
Internal working models
Bowlby’s idea that primary attachment relationship provides a template for future relationships; mental representation.
Relationships in later childhood (kerns)
Securely attached children have better friendships whereas insecure children later have friendship difficulties (Kerns 1994)
Bullying: Wilson + Smith (1998)
Assessed attachment type and bullying involvement using questionnaires on 196 children 7-11 in London. Securely attached are unlikely to be victims or perpetrators of bullying.
Resistant = bully.
Avoidant = victim
Romantic Relationships ; McCarthy (1999)
McCarthy studied 40 adult women who had been assessed as infants to establish attachment type. Those assessed as securely attached had the best adult-friendship and romantic relationships.
Relationships in adulthood as a parent + Bailey et al
Parents tend to base their parenting style on their IWM so attachment types tend to be passed on through generation of family.
Bailey et al found that 99 mother had the same attachment types as their mothers.
Hazan and Shafer’s love Quiz (1987)
Analysed 620 replies to a love quiz printed in a local American newspaper.
It assessed current or most important relationships and love experience.
56% securely attached, 25% insecure avoidant, 19% insecure resistant.
Findings of Hazan and Shafers Love quiz
Secure attachments were most likely to have good and long lasting romantic experiences. Avoidant tended to reveal jealousy and fear of intimacy. These findings suggest that patterns of attachment behaviour are reflected in romantic relationships.
