What did a Patron do?
A
- Give client financial support

- in the city-acted as patron’s supporters

-Had placards round necks with nationality, skills and defects
-Price varied- more valuable of craftsman, educated or attractive

How were slaves treated?
A
- Law allowed masters to sell, hire out, breed l, punish, torture, multilate, ad kill slaves
- belonged to master
- considered as nothing
- earnings belonged to master (sometimes allowed to keep peculium and save up for their freedom)
- some treated well-allowed property, wife and children, more food, allowed to graze own cattle on the estate.
- work in mines and quarries was a death sentence-usuallly criminals job

What were the advantages of being set free from slavery?
A
- Children have full rights of citizenship
- classified as a citizen
- could become Augustales(Roman public office, made up of freedmen, repaired buildings, erect statues, pay for games, religious duties)
- provided with felt cap to symbolise freedom.

What were the disadvantages of being set free from slavery?
A
- not allowed to run for public office
- not allowed to become a member of senetorial /equestrian classes
- often still worked for master
