  • Lapis niger inscription is the stingray evidence available that states rome was controlled by kings
  • no evidence to tell us when romes kings were replaced or what replaced them.
  • earliest definitive written evidence of the republic is from 280Bc: sarcophagus of Lucius Barbatus there is an epitaph, describing him as a consul and his achievements
  • this leaves 300 years between the inscription on the stele and Barbatus epitaph.
