- Lapis niger inscription is the stingray evidence available that states rome was controlled by kings
- no evidence to tell us when romes kings were replaced or what replaced them.
- earliest definitive written evidence of the republic is from 280Bc: sarcophagus of Lucius Barbatus there is an epitaph, describing him as a consul and his achievements
- this leaves 300 years between the inscription on the stele and Barbatus epitaph.
