What was the history behind slaves?
Carthage and Greek defeats led to many slaves who were treated brutally on Roman plantations. If they escaped they would have to steal and then be caught and crucified.
What happened to Mancinus?
He was captured by the Numantines and forced to sign a treaty. His quaestor, Tiberius Gracchus, saved many lives by writing the treaty. The treaty was rejected by the Roman senate though.
What did Scipio Aemilianus Africanus get elected consul for?
To solve the Numantine problem in Spain.
When Tiberius Gracchus was campaigning tribune of the plebs, what were the 3 issues he wanted to solve?
1) too many landless citizens
2) too many slaves
3) land controlled by senators
What was the problem with the 500 iugera rule?
It wasn’t actually followed, the senators controlled and owned most of the public land. It became impossible for small farmers to compete.
Octavius the tribune significance?
Vetoed Triberius Gracchus new land ownership proposal every time It came up, Gracchus eventually got him removed by vote.
What happened when Tiberius ran for tribune again?
His cousin, Scipio Nasica, led a group to his rally and told them that he was trying to become king. A massacre ensued. 300 died including Tiberius. The commission still went ahead with redistributing land.
What did Scipio Africanus Minor do during the time that Tiberius was killed?
Invaded Numantia and captured it.
Why was a war started in 125?
The Romans wanted to annex southern Gaul. This was to protect Massilia.
Who ended up owning between Spain and Italy?
The land bridge was fully roman controlled.
What did the land bridge area become known as?
Transalpine Gaul.
Who was Gaius Gracchus?
Politician with lots of reform ideas such as
- land commission
- grain pricing
- controls on interest
- More colonies
- knights on jury for government extortion cases
Which were the two parties that emerged from Gaius death?
1) Populaires - liked Gracchus policies
2) Optimates - wanted all power with the senate
What happened to Gaius Gracchus?
Did not get re-elected, went with a giant gang to protect him. Consul Opimius put together a group that slaughtered Gaius and his gang.
