A large group of countries ruled by a monarch or one ruler

A
The Roman Empire split in 285 AD because the emperor felt that the empire was too large to be ruled from 1 country.

A
Civil war in the empire and there was fighting in the borders from the barbarians.

A
The empire weakened due to civil wars, attacks from the Ostrogaths and the numerous soldiers dying resulted in the Western Empire to fall in 476 AD.
