“You need to calm down” Taylor Swift

One video that provoked both good and bad opinions was Taylor Swifts music video for “YNTCD” which was released in 2019. This song mainly focuses on supporting those in the LGBTQ+ community along with speaking up about online hate and promoting equality for everyone.

YNTCD scene 1- protesters

A

One scene which promotes support for the LGBTQ+ community is when we see protesters at a gay marriage holding up signs saying “Moron.” There is a comical aspect in this in that the word “Moron” is spelt wrong. This scene in particular promotes gay marriage and shows Taylors support for this whilst showing her distaste for homophobic people. However, one aspect which fans didn’t like is the fact that the characters protesting this gay marriage where stereotyped as “Bumpkins” I think this was a cheap way of emphasizing homophobia and rather than showing stereotypical homophobic people, Taylor could have done more research into this issue.

Q

aesthetic

A

This video also acts as a public service to her fans as it’s entertaining to watch. The video is set in a little town where everything (even the clothing worn by characters) follows a pastel color pallet. Although this makes it visually appealing to fans and entertains them, I think that the world this is set in differs from reality and almost looks like a fairytale land. This provoked controversy as its not realistic and doesn’t show the real issues that people part of the LGBTQ+ people actually face, rather creating a fairytale land.

Q

Showing it in calm way

A

The fact that the video only shows people being homophobic in a “calm” way rather than show the actual reality many LGBTQ+ people face with violence and abuse also emphasizes the lack of thought for fans that are a part of the LGBTQ+ community

Beuty competition

A

To promote equality in females, there is a scene where we see celebrity look alkies standing in a beauty competion waiting to see who is crowned as being the most beautiful. As infamous drag queen Rupal walks down waiting to award a girl with the crown he throws it in the air. This promotes equality as it shows how all females are beautiful and should be judged based on what they look like, rather their personality and attitudes

Q

Katy and Taylor

A

One scene which acted as a public service to her fans was the end scene where we see Taylors former frenemy, Katy perry embrace Taylor in a hug. Not only does this act as a public service to her fans as it shows that these two pop singers who had past drama are now friends, but it also promotes females supporting females no matter what their past was like. However, many people saw this as confusing to add in a video about promoting LGBTQ+ as it pulls the attention away from supporting gay people and focuses on Taylor and Katy showing the world that their friends which is irrelevant to the topic this video discusses

Q

Shade

A

One line which acted as further promotion for supporting LGBTQ+ member is “Cause shade never made anybody less gay.” This is a reflection on how hating gay people will not change who they are. Although, I think this further shows how this video doesn’t show the realism of homophobia as it suggesting the homophobic abuse is downplayed to “Shade” when many people have been physically and mentally abused due to being gay. So, her saying that homophobia is just people throwing shade is a clear indication that this video doesn’t act as a public service to her gay fans as it doesn’t recognize the abuse they go through and does a poor job of promoting the real-life issues that come with being part of the LGBTQ+ community.
