Roles of Organelles Flashcards
Nucleus
The nucleus serves as the repository of genetic information and the control center
Ribosomes
A ribosome is an intercellular structure made of both RNA and protein, and it is the site of protein synthesis in the cell
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
The RER is associated with many roles in protein synthesis, which also include post-translational modifications, folding, and sorting.
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Its main function is the synthesis of lipids, steroids, and carbohydrates, as well as the metabolism of exogenous substances, such as drugs or toxins.
Golgi apparatus
The Golgi apparatus, or Golgi complex, functions as a factory in which proteins received from the ER are further processed and sorted for transport to their eventual destinations: lysosomes, the plasma membrane, or secretion
Chloroplasts
Chloroplasts produce energy through photosynthesis and oxygen-release processes, which sustain plant growth and crop yield. (Only found in plants)
Mitochondria
The classic role of mitochondria is generating ATP by utilising the energy released during the oxidation of the food we eat.
