Public sector organisations are owned and controlled by the government. Their objective is to provide a service to the public and they are funded by taxes. Public sector organisations function in areas such as health, education, housing and social work.

What are third sector organisations set up to do, and what is their objective?
Third sector organisations are set up to help a cause or provide a service to members. Their objective is to raise money (eg through donations) and increase awareness for good causes. Examples of third sector organisations would be Oxfam, The Big Issue or a local youth club.

What is an entrepreneur?
An entrepreneur is the person who comes up with the idea for a business and combines the factors of production together to start the business.

What are some reasons why some people may decide to start their own business?
There are many reasons why someone may decide to start up their own business: • to make money; • they have been made redundant and see it as an alternative option; • they have spotted a gap in the market, e.g. they may have noticed there is demand for a service in the local area such as cleaning; • they wish to pursue a hobby/interest, e.g. someone may enjoy baking and decide to make a business out of it; • to be their own boss - some people prefer doing their own thing rather than being told what to do.
